The challenge:

A North American nuclear power plant needed a more accurate and efficient solution for radiation mapping and source term data analysis. The goal was to enhance work planning, improve pre-job briefings, and minimise radiation exposure to workers while ensuring compliance with radiation protection regulations.

Solution

The plant deployed our NV-Explore Gamma Imaging System on the Boston Dynamics Spot quadruped robot. This system, integrated with NV-Fusion software, enables the generation of detailed 3D point cloud maps with overlaid Gamma source term data.

Key capabilities include:

  • Accurate radiation mapping in hazardous environments.
  • 3D visualisation of dose planes to support work planning.
  • Modular design with an integrated control interface on the robot’s handheld controller.
  • A certified dose meter for regulatory compliance.

Post-processing capabilities through N Visage Fusion Lite software.

NV-Explore has been utilised for routine radiation scans and engineering projects during outages, providing real-time insights into radiation exposure and contamination levels.

The results:

Our NV-Explore system has successfully transformed radiation mapping at the plant by:

Generating precise 3D models with radiation dose heatmaps at waist height for enhanced work planning and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) compliance.

  • Enabling accurate analysis of radiation source terms, allowing engineers to assess contamination in piping and containment areas.
  • Supporting near real-time assessment of pipe flush effectiveness before and after cleaning procedures.
  • Facilitating the development of a site-wide data-sharing system, providing secure access to radiation mapping outputs for all stakeholders.

By implementing NV-Explore, the nuclear power plant has significantly improved radiation safety, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making across its facility
