The challenge

The evaporator cell at Dounreay had been sealed for over 25 years, leaving its contamination levels and radiation dose rates unknown. The deployment faced significant challenges, including high radiation levels, restricted access, narrow walkways, and poor lighting, necessitating initial surveys to ensure safe entry for human operators.

The solution

Our team tackled the challenges of the sealed Dounreay Cell by deploying our N-Visage Explore system.

Integrated with the Boston Dynamics Spot robot, NV-Explore facilitated exploration by providing high-quality 3D radiometric survey data across varying dose rates.

One Spot robot conducted these surveys, while another deployed Rajant mesh network nodes and performed hardware inspections.

Partnering with Leica Geosystems, we utilised the Leica BLKARC Lidar for high-fidelity geospatial surveys. These 3D point clouds were used by NV-Explore for online and post- processing analysis, giving us a clear understanding of the radiation distribution.

The results

5 Days to complete the entire operation on-site.

The survey revealed dose rates within the cell were above safe working levels.

Data gathered allowed for a comprehensive 3D reconstruction of radiation sources and dose planes, providing vital insights for effective planning and ensuring safe human operations.

By doing the initial groundwork, Spot has shown us the hazards that might affect workers who are tasked with the decommissioning. We will use the data to ensure that we mitigate those hazards and keep our people safe. This work also has the potential to save money on our decommissioning investigation
