The challenge

Balfour Beatty partnered with Createc and Leica Geosystems to conduct a robotic survey of a historic tunnel network beneath Leeds city centre. Due to the confined, hazardous conditions and presence of asbestos, human access to the tunnels is both costly and restricted.

This project aimed to survey the tunnels while overcoming logistical barriers, such as limited access points, significant flooding, and the need for continuous, reliable communication and data capture.

The Leeds tunnel network presented numerous challenges:

  1. Restricted Access: Only two access points existed – a staircase from a substation and a manhole in a busy road, making entry challenging and disruptive.
  2. Flooding: Some tunnel sections were flooded up to 1.2 meters deep, requiring specialised equipment to navigate and survey submerged areas.
  3. Communication and Navigation: The depth and structure of the tunnels obstructed radio signals, complicating the remote operation of robotic platforms.
  4. Hazardour Environment: Abestos contamination and confined spaces limited personnel involvement, necessitating the use of remote-controlled and autonomous robotic systems.

Our Solution

Our solution combined advanced robotics, communication systems, and geospatial mapping technologies to safely and effectively survey the Leeds tunnel network. Deploying the Boston Dynamics Spot robot with Leica’s BLK ARC laser scanning module, we enabled autonomous mapping in hazardous, confined areas. The Osprey system’s UGV and USV supported Spot, allowing thorough data collection in rugged and flooded sections. Rajant mesh radios, ensured seamless, beyond visual line of sight communication throughout the tunnels. This integrated solution minimised human risk, reduced costs, and provided precise data for Balfour Beatty’s engineering assessments.

The results:

The team successfully mapped and imaged the tunnel network. This data allowed Balfour’s engineers to evaluate tunnel conditions, focusing on structural elements like steelwork and roofing. The

Rajant mesh network ensured reliable communication, while the robotic platforms navigated the complex terrain without direct human intervention. By employing advanced robotics, the survey was completed safely and efficiently, with minimal downtime despite significant environmental challenges.
