Innovative Robotics Partnership Enhances Safety at Equinor’s Mongstad Facility

Developed with Cognite and Adigo, the two-year robotics project will limit the time process operators need to spend in hazardous environments. 

We’re proud to announce our new joint robotics project with Equinor, a Norwegian multinational energy company. This joint initiative is designed to enhance operations and safety measures at the company’s onshore facility Mongstad, close to Bergen, Norway 

The project, developed in partnership with Adigo and Cognite, aims to set new standards in the deployment of robotics within onshore facilities. By integrating advanced robots, IP cameras, and IoT sensors, the initiative will enable remote inspections and significantly reduce the need for process operators to enter hazardous environments. 

Our expertise in deploying robotics for harsh environments plays a crucial role in this project. Our collaboration uses the Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot to perform detailed inspections and carry out complex tasks that traditionally would have required human intervention. This innovative approach will ensure that safety and operational efficiency are prioritised at Mongstad.

Cognite’s leading Industrial DataOps platform, Cognite Data Fusion®️, serves as the data backbone for the project, integrating operational, engineering, robotics, and IT data to deliver an advanced digital twin solution. This solution, combined with Cognite InRobot, a user-friendly interface for robotics field operations, empowers process operators to execute complex, multi-robot inspection programs without the need for robotics experts.

Adigo’s robot platform VÅK, known for its heavy payload capacity and extended operational hours, will be utilised for autonomous transport of water samples from various points in the water treatment plant. This integration will further reduce human exposure to hazardous areas, supporting the overarching goal of the project.
